Course Description

The six-week Junior Level 1 course is designed to introduce children to basic woodworking through structured weekly sessions that combine theory with practical application. The course can be attended as an after-school activity or as part of a home-school program. Learners are guided step by step in a controlled and supervised workshop environment, allowing them to develop practical skills at an appropriate pace. Over the duration of the course, each student completes several small projects, including items intended as gifts and one personal project. The curriculum covers fundamental woodworking techniques such as measuring, marking, and accurate cutting, as well as basic wood theory, including an introduction to different wood types and their properties. Learners are taught surface preparation methods, including sanding and preparing wood for finishing, and are introduced to structural assembly through common joining and binding techniques. Emphasis is placed throughout on tool safety, with learners receiving instruction and supervision in the correct and safe use of both hand tools and selected power tools.
